"Samuels, Darren Bravo and Carlos Brathwaite have declined central contracts offered by the WICB for the period 2016-17. The list of centrally-contracted players depleted to 12 after the WICB had increased it from 12 to 15 earlier this January, for the period 2015-16. Some of the other big names not retained from the previous batch of contracted players were Denesh Ramdin and Kemar Roach; Jerome Taylor was left out as he retired from Tests in July. Also left out were fast bowler Sheldon Cottrell and opening batsman Rajendra Chandrika. Roston Chase, Alzarri Joesph, Miguel Cummins and Jomel Warrican were the new faces in the list of contracted players, which was shortlisted based on performances between October 2015 and September this year. Central contracts are given by the WICB for only Test players."

WICB's contracted players for 2016-17
Devendra Bishoo, Jermaine Blackwood, Kraigg Brathwaite, Shane Dowrich, Shannon Gabriel, Jason Holder, Shai Hope, Leon Johnson, Alzarri Joseph, Roston Chase, Miguel Cummins, Jomel Warrican

IN: Alzarri Joseph, Roston Chase, Miguel Cummins, Jomel Warrican

OUT: Marlon Samuels, Darren Bravo, Rajendra Chandrika, Denesh Ramdin, Sheldon Cottrell, Kemar Roach

This might explain the lackadaisical attitude of Samuels in this Test series...he gave the impression that he didn't seem to care. He's 35 now, and clearly looking towards playing the T20 leagues in the twilight of his career. Lil Bravo has clearly noticed that his older brother is wealthier than him, and wants a piece of the action. Carlos is tired of carrying drinks, and wants to capitalise on his World T20 success, uninhibited by WICB central contracts.

In essence, the Test team is just a 'C' team, from which players seek to move on to the greater prize, which is playing in the T20 leagues around the world....

"the contracts for men range from US$100,000 to US$150,000. The contract for the period is based on performances from October 1, 2015 to September 2016."

So, there are now only 12 players on central contracts, including non-performers Shai Hope, Leon Johnson and Miguel Cummins, as well as bench-warmer Jomel Warrican't.

It gets worse....

'Apart from Samuels, the left-handed Bravo is the most experienced member of the Windies batting line-up, having played 49 Tests and scored 3400 runs at an average of 40. He is also a treasured member of the one-day team where he has played 94 games and averages 32. According to the newspaper report, Bravo would have joined the likes of Test novices Jomel Warrican and Alzarri Joseph as players with Grade C contracts. Grade A is the highest level contract on offer and is worth US$150 000, with Grade B valued at $125 000 and Grade C, $100 000. Twenty-three year-old opener Kraigg Brathwaite was given a Grade A contract while Test and one-day captain Jason Holder secured a Grade B, the NewsDay reported.'

Samuels says thanks for the offer but no thanks and 5 wkts in 4 Inns, @ 38.00, is now enough to be offered a contract   You couldn't make it up.

Its encouraging to see these new contracts afford the players even more potential earning power, but isnt that in effect equivalent to rewarding failure :?:

A Nurse in ODI's avg 40.61 with the ball and 17.84 with the bat over the last 12 months.

S Dowrich avg 17.50 from 19 Inns in Test cricket over the last 12 months.

K Powell avg 28.84 from 19 Inns in Test cricket over the last 12 months.

After last years showing, these players have done extreamley well to gain a guaranteed purse to play cricket, coincidentally, none of them have a T20 contract abroad. Their numbers suggest a level of perfomance that wont be enough to rasie bwicbc first XI past 9th in icc rankings so, is availability, collocuially known as commitment, now the only criteria used to award these contracts....
