Poor batting continued to plague the PCL, as the ninth round got underway yesterday. At Providence, medium-pacer Raymon Reifer took 5-20 to dismiss Barbados for an embarrassing 76 all out, number 11 Chemar Holder topscoring with 22. Reifer returned to hit 33 not out, to guide Guyana to 162-7 at stumps, supported by another 33 from Vishaul Singh. Part-time medium-pacer Jonathan Carter has taken three wickets to date.

In Kingston, veteran left-arm spinner Nikita Miller took 7-50 to bowl the Leewards out for 210 all out. Devon Thomas topscored with 65. At the close of the first day's play, Jamaica were 77-2.

In Roseau, Windwards pacer Sherman Lewis has taken three wickets so far to reduce Trinidad to 114-6, but unbeaten half-centuries from Imran Khan and Khary Pierre took the tourists to 254-6 at the close.

Unsurprisingly, Guyana were in command at the halfway stage of their match at Providence. Allrounder Raymon Reifer hit 52 not out to take Guyana to 201 all out, while part-timer medium-pacer Jonathan Carter took 4-52. Trailing by 125 on first innings, Barbados did better the next time around, reaching 228-6 at stumps in their second. Shane Moseley hit 64, while there were two wickets each for Reifer and Permaul so far.

On the second day's play at Sabina Park, Jamaica took a narrow 40-run lead over the Leewards on first innings. Brandon King hit 95, as Jamaica made 250 all out, while offspinner Rahkeem Cornwall took 6-57. The Leewards put up a better fight in their second innings, reaching 171-3 at stumps, thanks to half-centuries from Devon Thomas (65) and Kasey Carty (63 not out).

A total of 14 wickets fell on Day Two in Dominica, where Trinidad took command. Allrounders Khary Pierre made 106 not out and Imran Khan 71 to propel Trinidad to 307 all out, against pacer Sherman Lewis, who took 7-76. Legspinner Khan then snared 5-54 to dismiss the Windwards for 200 all out, Roland Cato topscoring with 46.

There was more disappointing batting in the PCL, as two matches finished within three days.

At Providence, defending champions Guyana beat Barbados by seven wickets. Medium-pacer Raymon Reifer took 4-22 and left-arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul 4-62 to dismiss Barbados for 238 all out. Set a paltry 114 to win, Guyana chased down the target for the loss of three wickets, Chandrapaul Hemraj hitting 51, and pacer Shamar Springer taking 3-29.

At Sabina Park, the Leewards beat Jamaica by 134 runs. Half-centuries from Kasey Carty (68), Rahkeem Cornwall (52) and, finally after a long, wretched run of low scores, Kieran Powell (54), carried the Leewards to 312 all out in their second innings, against veteran left-arm spinner Nikita Miller (4-95), Gordon Bryan (3-65) and Akim Frazer (3-82). Pacer Sheno Berridge then took 4-40, and there were two wickets each for spinners Cornwall, Damion Jacobs and Terrence Ward, as they dismissed Jamaica for 138 all out.

In Roseau, on the penultimate day, there was one of those rare occurrences in the PCL - a declaration! Wicketkeeper and captain Denesh Ramdin made 57, and there were 40s from Jeremy Solozano and Tion Webster, as Trinidad made 244-8 declared against Kavem Hodge's 6-68. The Windwards have been set an unlikely 352 to win on today's final day.

Here's the team of the round after nine rounds.

The standard of batting has fallen so badly that I've had to drop the bar to over 400 runs and a low average of over 35. Bowlers had to take at least 25 wickets and average under 25. Even then, I had to relax the requirement to get in enough batsmen into the side.

1) Montcin Hodge (Lee) 641 runs @ ave of 42.73
2) Devon Smith (Wind) 713 runs @ ave of 47.53
3) Jonathan Carter (Bdos) 580 runs @ ave of 41.42
4) Brandon King (Jca) 392 runs @ ave of 43.55
5) Anthony Bramble (Guy) (wkpr) 498 runs @ ave of 49.80
6) Kavem Hodge (Wind) 473 runs @ ave of 29.56 & 28 wkts @ ave of 25.64
7) Rahkeem Cornwall (Lee) 407 runs @ ave of 31.30 & 49 wkts @ ave of 15.75
8) Imran Khan (TT) 389 runs @ ave of 29.92 & 36 wkts @ ave of 22.19
9) Romario Shepherd (Guy) 297 runs @ ave of 24.75 & 29 wkts @ ave of 23.06
10) Veerasammy Permaul (Guy) 39 wkts @ ave of 21.38
11) Nikita Miller (Jca) 35 wkts @ ave of 15.34
