Judge in sudden resignation to fight general election in St Joseph

Justice Herbert Volney, who has relentlessly rebuked what he saw as the PNM administration’s mishandling of the justice system, quit his job yesterday to don the robes of a politician to contest the St Joseph seat on a United National Congress ticket.

In the 2007 poll, the PNM’s Kennedy Swaratsingh won the seat with 7,965 votes over the UNC’s Dr Carson Charles with 4,945 and 4,144 votes for COP candidate Gillian Lucky, then a lawyer, now a judge.

Volney made no mention of his decision yesterday when he spent his final day as a judge dealing with cause list cases in the San Fernando First Criminal Assize. However, a hint came when during the Power 102FM contempt of court matter in Port of Spain earlier, he reportedly said for the last 15 years he had been on the bench in the courtroom, that the courtroom had been in darkness which if not fixed could hurt the eyes but there was more light on the horizon.

He handed his resignation letter to Chief Justice Ivor Archie yesterday. Volney’s candidacy was not mentioned either by UNC Political Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar who addressed the media after screening nominees at Rienzi Complex in Couva.
