At the centre of a political firestorm, former judge Herbert Volney said yesterday that leaving behind his career and life in the Judiciary was the hardest decision he has ever made.

He said people were free to judge him for his decision, but he felt compelled to act in defence of the people.

Among the reasons, he said, was the alleged interference of Attorney General John Jeremie in the affairs of the Judiciary, and the ’emergence of a dangerous, self-absorbed tyrant’ in Prime Minister Patrick Manning.

Two days after delivering his final ruling in the San Fernando High Court and Hall of Justice, Volney showed up at the United National Congress’ (UNC) headquarters at Rienzi Complex, Couva, yesterday.

He was screened as a nominee for the marginal St Joseph constituency, and is tipped for the seat.
