This is Black History Month in the UK, after all, though the British press is quite happy to ignore that.
Here's a lecture he held at the Oxford Union

... on 21 December 2011, 57 year-old St. Kitts-born father of four daughters, Elder Philmore Leonard Mills of Richmond Crescent, Slough was admitted to Wexham Park Hospital's Intensive Care Unit suffering from pneumonia. He had been rushed to hospital after collapsing at home near Slough. By 24 December 2011, Elder Mills had been moved from Intensive Care to ward 9. On 27 December 2011, at around 3.00 a.m., Elder Mills, who was on round-the-clock oxygen and had a tumour on his lung, died in the custody of Thames Valley Police at Wexham Park Hospital's ward 9, handcuffed behind his back, following an incident occurred in which hospital security and then police were called. Elder Mills was handcuffed to the rear and restrained. He is believed to have suffered a heart attack.

(Following the March 2016 inquest verdict) In a statement the family said: "... we are none the wiser as to how a seriously ill man with pneumonia, heart and lung disease, lung cancer and blood clots in his lungs could have been allowed to die under police restraint on the floor of a respiratory ward.”

'Nigel Farage, for example, the leader of the hard-right British political party UKIP, drew trans-Atlantic outrage for telling the BBC this week, "because of his grandfather and Kenya and colonisation, I think Obama bears a bit of a grudge against this country." So did right-wing London Mayor Boris Johnson, for a column musing on "the part-Kenyan President’s ancestral dislike of the British empire." And, indeed, when Obama is accused of bearing an "anti-colonial" grudge, it is typically framed as irrational, often implied to be racial, or made alongside an accusation that he secretly hates America. "Anti-colonial" has become a kind of dog-whistle, and at times a racist one.'

"And yet the predominant tone of the time was still gently and subtly racist. You got used to the casual assumption that black people were less intelligent, and for that reason spoke funny, and what's more, had grotesque sexual appetites. Of course they were humans like us, of course we were all equal, but it was damn good of us to admit that, wasn't it? So perhaps that showed that we liberals were slightly more human than the rest. Better not say that out loud. Just let the thought creep beneath your guard and lurk treacherously in the deepest recesses of your thoughts."

"Sobers took four. West Indies won the match by ten wickets. They won the series 3-1. Sobers made 322 runs and took 20 wickets. Anyone who thought white people were superior to black people had only to look at the scoreboard. England were outplayed, out-fought and out-thought."

Now that Britain is celebrating 400 years since the death of Shakespeare, I was hoping for an honest assessment of the role of Caliban in "The Tempest". Sadly, it seems that British society is unwilling to discuss the racism expressed by Shakespeare about black people in this play.

I think this sentence suffices:

"With The Tempest's Caliban, Shakespeare created an archetype in the modern era depicting black men as slaves and savages who threaten civilization."

"Diane Abbott as Home Secretary? It’s become yet another parroted Tory scare slogan, as if we were being asked to put Katie Hopkins in charge of the Prevent strategy, or gift Jeremy Clarkson the presidency of the British Caravan Club. As on many previous occasions – too many indeed – she is being subjected to the sort of racial and gender abuse that some of us had thought had been consigned to the past. If you want to experience the deep racism that still pervades our supposedly tolerant society, just have a wander round the internet."

The abuse Diane Abbott has suffered in this country has been horrendous...I have a daughter who's politically active, and I've been advising her not to get too involved in British politics, because look how Abbott's being treated:

"And how, how has this brilliant, bright, dedicated, little black girl been thanked for 30 years of daily service to our country? Like this. This is how you repay her. She gets this EVERY. SINGLE. DAY. FOR. THIRTY. YEARS."

Unfortunately, the Tories have learnt to play the politics of race to perfection. Decades ago, Margaret Thatcher pursued an economic agenda that laid waste to Labour heartlands and devastated the fortunes of the white working class. But she was able to capture much of the traditional Labour vote by appealing to what WEB Dubois called the “wages of whiteness”.

Draping herself in national pride and warning that the country was being “swamped” by immigrants, Thatcher offered the comfort and pride in whiteness. Once in power, the Conservatives decimated industry and public services by cutting taxes and allowing the rich to take an ever growing slice of the economic pie.

Theresa May has suspended the Conservative MP Anne Marie Morris after she used the racist slur "n***** in the woodpile".

The whip has been removed from the MP for Newton Abbot, in Devon, after she was recorded casually using the term at a panel event to discuss Brexit.

“I was shocked to hear of these remarks, which are completely unacceptable,” the Prime Minister said.

Hmmm, does Mrs Morris share her husband, and electoral agents, extreme position on the birth rates of immigrants and does he agree with her veiws on .... oh, but of course, he's not exactly the best person to ask is he.

Do the MSM see any other unsuitable scenarios that may arise as a consequence of these mutual opinions or is it just me over analysing ? If as suggested, 'this language is actually from another era then the only conclussion that can be reached is it was being used culturally. The name of the location holding the event, the East India Club, also appears to suggest as such.

" Culture is the characteristics and knowledge of a particular group of people, encompassing language, religion, cuisine, social habits, music and arts.

The Center for Advance Research on Language Acquisition goes a step further, defining culture as shared patterns of behaviors and interactions, cognitive constructs and understanding that are learned by socialization. Thus, it can be seen as the growth of a group identity fostered by social patterns unique to the group. "

The East India club is located in what historically is Londons cutural centre, not 10 minutes walk from Big Ben, Buckingham Palace, Westminister Abbey, Downing Street, St James Palace, The Institute of Contemporary Arts, Royal Academy of Arts, Her Majestys Theatre, The London Library, Westminister Cathedral, The Imperial War Museum, MI5, Millbank ad infintum.
