The Windrush controversy has placed the Government’s efforts to crack down on illegal immigration under the spotlight. Underpinned by legislation including the Immigration Acts of 2014 and 2016, ministers set out to introduce what then home secretary Theresa May described as a “hostile environment” for those in the UK unlawfully.
