So, now it's on to the Jamaica Invitation tomorrow....

The women's 400 should be interesting:

"Tomorrow's 400 metres showdown against Christine Ohuruogu will be her biggest test since she won a long-overdue gold medal in her 400m pet event at the 2009 IAAF World Championships in Athletics in Berlin, Germany, but it wont be her last, as Jamaica-born US quarter-mile star Sanya Richards-Ross will be spending more time in the 200m this year. Richards-Ross, who has a personal best of 22.17 seconds in the 200m, will face off with Ohuruogu - who got the better of her at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games - in the 400m this Saturday, at the JN Jamaica International Invitational at the National Stadium. She will also face competition from Jamaica's 400m hurdles specialist Kaliese Spencer and United States indoor champion Natasha Hastings, in what is truly her first meaningful outing since that triumph in 2009."

Melaine Walker returns with her first 400 hurdles of the season....

'Walker, who had to cut her 2010 season short due to injuries, will be running her first 400 metre hurdles race for the season at the meet. "Normally when I’m going into a race, I never expect anything. I just go ahead not expecting to see any time (or) wonder about how I’m going to do. I’m just going to go out there (to) execute the race the way I’m supposed to, and then the clock will tell the time," she said.'

Some results....

There were four sub-10 clockings in the men's 100, as Jamaica's Yohan Blake won in a time of 9.80, ahead of Daniel Bailey of Antigua (9.94), American Mike Rodgers (9.96) and Jamaican Michael Frater (9.98). Carmelita Jeter of the US won the women's 100 in a time of 10.86, ahead of Trinidad's Kelly-Ann Baptiste (10.94) and Jamaicans Sherone Simpson and Kerron Stewart, both of whom clocked 11.07. However, I believe both races produced wind-aided times.

Shelly-Ann Fraser won the women's 200 in a time of 22.10, beating Jamaican compatriot Veronica Campbell-Brown (22.37) into second, and Debbie Ferguson (22.78) took third. Nickel Ashmeade of Jamaica won the men's 200 in a time of 19.95, while his compatriot Steve Mullings took second in 20.15, and American Wallace Spearmon (20.18) was third, while Nesta Carter finished fourth, and Asafa Powell came last.

It was a Jamaica 1-2-3 in the women's 400, as Novlene Williams won in 50.71, ahead of Rosemarie Whyte (51.15) and Kaliese Spencer (51.30), and American Sanya Richards came in fifth. Chris Brown of the Bahamas took the men's equivalent in 45.37, with second going to Trinidad's Renny Quow (45.43), Jermaine Gonzales of Jamaica finished third (45.52).

Jamaica's Melaine Walker announced her return to competitive action by winning the women's 400 hurdles in 55.60, while Americans Nicole Leach (56.08) and Danielle Gilchrist (57.67) were second and third. Britain's Andy Turner took the men's 110 hurdles in a time of 13.28, ahead of American Terrence Trammell (13.39), and Jamaica's Dwight Thomas (13.41). Tiki James of the US won the women's 100 hurdles in a time of 12.88, ahead of Jamaica's Vonette Dixon (12.98) and American Candice Davis (13.11). Justin Gaymon (48.58) won the men's 400 hurdles ahead of fellow-American Kerron Clement (48.78) and Jamaica's Danny McFarlane (49.04), with Josef Robertson of Jamaica fourth.

Jamaican Sheree Francis won the women's high jump on countback, as four athletes could only clear 1.85, the others being Bulgaria's Viktoria Andonova, Kimberly Williams of Jamaica, and Deidre Mullen of the US. It was an American 1-2-3 in the shot put, with Adam Nelson (21.24) winning ahead of Noah Bryant (20.46), Cory Martin (19.93) and Jamaican Dorian Scott (19.63) in fourth.

The men's 1500 was won by Saffer Pete van der Westhuizen (3:45.19), the women's 800 was won by Jamaican Kenia Sinclair (1:58.41), and the men's equivalent was won by American Khadevis Robinson (1:46.25).

"IN 2007, only one Jamaican was legally running under 10 seconds in the 100m. Now, in 2011, all eight sprinters expected to face the starter in the 100m final at the National Championships this week at the National Stadium are likely to be sub 10-second athletes."

Some fast times were set in the men's 100m heats at the Jamaica National Trials yesterday, though they were wind-aided....

Yohan Blake scorched to victory in his heat in 9.83, just ahead of veteran Michael Frater (9.87) and Lerone Clarke (9.99). The other three winners cruised to victory, and can clearly run faster - Asafa Powell (9.99), Nesta Carter (10.05) and Steve Mullings (10.13). The first semi will feature Mullings, Blake, Frater, Clarke, Mario Forsythe and Oshane Bailey, while the second semi will comprise Powell, Carter, Dexter Lee and Ainsley Waugh.

Those advancing in the women's 400 include Kaliese Spencer (50.86), Davita Prendagast (51.47), Rosemarie Whyte (51.98), Novlene Williams, Natoya Goule, Shericka Williams, Shareefa Lloyd, and Patricia Hall, while among those going thru from the men's equivalent are Jermaine Gonzales (45.61), Oral Thompson (45.69), Allodin Fothergill (45.98), Edino Steele, Lansford Spence and Leford Green.

In a highly competitive men's 100 metres, Commonwealth champion Lerone Clarke (10.24) and promising youngster Oshane Bailey (10.21) both bowed out in the semis, and the final, running into a -1.8 headwind, saw Asafa Powell winning in 10.08, in a photo finish with Yohan Blake (10.09), Steve Mullings (10.10) and Nesta Carter (10.12). Michael Frater was fifth in 10.19 and Dexter Lee sixth in 10.31. With Usain Bolt given a bye because he's the defending champion, and with Tyson Gay withdrawing from the American Trials due to injury, there is now a very realistic possibility Jamaica could have a 1-2-3 in the World Champs final!
Veronica Campbell-Brown won the women's 100 convincingly in 10.84, ahead of Kerron Stewart (10.97), but there was a surprising third for Jura Levy (11.10), beating Sherone Simpson (11.15), Aleen Bailey (11.18) and Schillonie Calvert (11.24). The qualifiers will be joined by defending champ Shelly-Ann Fraser in the World Champs.

The women's 400 hurdles featured no upsets, with Kaliese Spencer winning in 54.15, ahead of upcoming junior Ristanna Tracey (54.58) and Nickeisha Wilson (55.95). These qualifiers will be joined by defending champion Melaine Walker. The men's equivalent was won by Leford Green (49.19), ahead of Josef Robertson (49.64) and Roxroy Cato (49.66). Surprisingly, Danny McFarlane finished fourth in 49.77 and Isa Phillips fifth in 49.86.
