Ben Duckett has been omitted from the England Lions tour of the West Indies next year as the ECB get tough on the off-field antics that has left them defending the professionalism of the Ashes squad.

Let's see how the Lions players performed in the last county cricket season....

How many of their batsmen averaged over 35?

Livingston (24) 803 runs @ 47.23
Lawrence (20) 761 runs @ 44.76
Clarke (21) 920 runs @ 43.80
Foakes (24) 110 runs @ 42.50
Davies (23) 916 runs @ 39.82
Coughlin (25) 364 runs @ 36.40
Hameed (21) 513 runs @ 28.50
Curran (19) 423 runs @ 26.43
Jennings (25) 490 runs @ 25.78
Gubbins (24) 314 runs @ 24.15

Six of them...not bad. Will our selections reflect a similar balance? Or will it be packed with force-ripe PCL failures?

How many of their bowlers averaged under 30?

Porter (24) 75 wkts @ 16.82
Mahmood (20) 12 wkts @ 21.33
Leach (26) 51 wkts @ 25.78
Tongue (20) 47 wkts @ 25.78
Coughlin (25) 27 wkts @ 29.77
Roland-Jones (29) 28 wkts @ 31.42
Crane (20) 16 wkts @ 44.68
Curran (19) 25 wkts @ 47.16

So, it seems young batsmen can score lots of runs in FC cricket. And 29-year old players can get picked. Well what do you know?

BTW, old man Shiv hit 831 runs at an average of 51.93...better than anything any member of the 'C' team could do in county cricket.

These were the best performers in the last series....

1) Sunil Ambris - 278 runs @ average of 55.60 = IN THE TEST SIDE

2) Rahkeem Cornwall - 14 wickets @ average of 27.85 = REMAINS
3) Keon Joseph - nine wkts @ ave of 17.22 = REMAINS
4) Damion Jacobs - 12 wkts @ ave of 20.08 = REMAINS
5) Sheldon Cottrell - four wkts @ ave of 29.25 = REMAINS
6) Reynard Leveridge - two wkts @ ave of 31 = REMAINS

So, who else makes the squad from this season's PCL?

I'm assuming Devon Smith, Nikita Miller, and Denesh Ramdin get deservedly called up to the Test team against Sri Lanka this summer...a big "if", knowing how biased the Bajan Courtney Browne and his selectors are.

With that pipe dream in mind, I would include the five players who excelled in the last 'A' team series....

1) Rahkeem Cornwall (Lee)
2) Keon Joseph (Guy)
3) Damion Jacobs (Jca)
4) Sheldon Cottrell (Jca)
5) Reynard Leveridge (Jca)

And then I would pick the best performers in the PCL who are under 30....

6) John Campbell (Jca)
7) Shamar Brooks (Bdos)
8) Kaven Hodge (Wind)
9) Vishal Singh (Guy)
10) Anthony Bramble (Guy) (wkpr)
11) Keemo Paul (Guy)
12) Veerasammy Permaul (Guy)
13) Jeremiah Louis (Lee)
14) Fabian Allen (Jca)
15-16) Two of Shane Moseley, Chanderpaul Hemraj, Montcin Hodge or Tagenarine Chanderpaul

That would be an 'A' team picked on merit. Now, will the trough dwellers in the WICB apply the same principle of meritocracy? I won't hold my breath....

Here's the selection....

Kieran Powell (captain) - DEMOTED FROM TEST SIDE
Shamarh Brooks (vice captain) - DID WELL IN PCL
Jermaine Blackwood - DEMOTED FROM TEST SIDE
John Campbell - DID WELL IN PCL
Rahkeem Cornwall - DID WELL IN LAST 'A' SERIES
Miguel Cummins - DEMOTED FROM TEST SIDE
Shane Dowrich - DEMOTED FROM TEST SIDE
Jahmar Hamilton - DOESN'T DESERVE TO BE PICKED
Keon Joseph - DID WELL IN LAST 'A' SERIES
Jeremiah Louis - DID WELL IN PCL
Raymon Reifer - DEMOTED FROM TEST SIDE
Vishaul Singh - DID WELL IN PCL
Jomel Warrican - DID WELL IN PCL

The following players can consider themselves unlucky - Hodge, Bramble, Paul, Permaul, Jacobs, Cottrell, Leveridge and Jacobs.

Wicketkeeper Aldane Thomas trumpeted his credentials for a recall to the first-string Jamaica team by hitting 109 against the England Lions. However, there was not much else from the other batsmen as Jamie Porter (3-24) and Toby Roland-Jones )3-37) bowled the Jamaica XI out for 236 all out.

The warm up match at Sabina Park ended in a draw. In their second innings, the England Lions made 230 all out thanks mainly to a knock of 87 from Joe Clarke. Spinner Jamie Merchant took 5-35. Chasing an unlikely 257 for victory, the Jamaicans closed on 131-4, Asad Fudadin topscoring with 29, Jack Leach and Paul Coughlin taking two wickets each.
