A bus carrying the West Indies cricket team was hit by stones as it left Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium yesterday after the side easily beat Bangladesh in a group match at the World Cup. West Indies media manager Philip Spooner told The Associated Press that seven stones hit the right side of the bus, with two of them cracking windows, as it left the stadium in the Dhaka suburb of Mirpur. “Two stones hit the windows on the right side of the bus but they did not smash or throw glass into the bus,” Spooner said. “Everyone is safe and back at the hotel. It was really disappointing behaviour by the Bangladeshis, and it's not as isolated as some of the Bangladeshi officials would have us believe....
There were reports of rioting at Dhaka university, and disgruntled fans stoned the house of captain Shakib al Hasan as well.
Clearly, Bangladesh needs to do more to protect visiting players, because their team is so crap that they're going to get more thrashings in the near future. For starters, they need to ensure that all their buses also have bars on their windows. If the glass had splintered, instead of just shattering, there could've been some serious injuries. If those stones had splintered the glass, and had gone thru and hit someone's head, we could've had a fatality. Maybe, the authorities also need to think about the route they're taking from the ground to the hotel. Maybe the authorities also need to think about using a different hotel, which is nearer to the ground.
Today it was stones, tomorrow it could be grenades....
