It will soon be starting and i think it's a vital series, no doubt they are a good team but SO ARE WE on our day, most of the team we faced in the world cup will be in the Test side but they will be facing a different side when they come to the caribbean with Nash, Baugh, Dwayne Bravo, Edwards, Taylor, Samuels and Barath all possibly coming into the side

But anyway my team would be..

Gayle
Barath
Darren
Samuels
Nash
Bravo (c)-if he's still injured then Carlos Brathwaite or Kevin Stoute
Baugh
Gabriel/Russell
Roach
Pascal
Bishoo

Judging by Gibbo's comments after the Pak game it looks like he's ready to drop some "senior players" and to me the only likely casualties would be Chanders and Sarwan, he could drop Gayle too but when you look at his recent performances at Test level that would be a major risk, i also think Benn's position is really under threat from Bishoo, Benn didn't do too well in SL and was very expensive in the world cup too so i expect him to be dropped to be honest,

I pray Dwayne is fit in time (he's back in the Caribbean now and apparently he'll start light training in the next few days) because it will put the selectors under huge pressure to drop Sammy, if Dwayne isn't fit though then it gives them an excuse to keep him in!! ,

As for the pacers, i don't expect Taylor and Edwards to be rushed back but Gabriel has really done well this season and i think him alongside Roach would cause problems, i also think Pascal deserves a chance, he was unlucky not to have played in the third Test against SL due to the rain but he's come back in this four day competition and has continued to take wickets, it will also be interesting to see if Russell is given another chance at Test level, he started well in SL by getting a wicket early but he became expensive after that, his run up didn't look good either but he came back in the world cup and done very well indeed, took some wickets and his run up looked much better than before,

Whatever the case i hope the coach and selectors have their heads screwed on because we simply can't afford to lose this series now.

Yeah, i don't think it means anything really!!, Nash is in essence a "senior player", so is Samuels and Gayle but they would still be in my Test team, i'd be very surprised though if Chanders and Benn are picked!!, they might give Sars another chance and i wouldn't be upset about that to be honest but i still think he should sit and let Samuels play first.

I was wondering who you were, Afro, until I saw you leave out Shiv, and that left me in no doubt....
Shiv's our leading runscorer in Tests against South Africa last year, and that has to be taken into consideration. You cannot pick a Test team based on ODI results in the World Cup.

This would be my XI, depending on fitness, after the ODIs against Pakistan....

1) Chris Gayle
2) Adrian Barath/Devon Smith
3) Ramnaresh Sarwan
4) Shiv Chanderpaul
5) Darren Bravo/Marlon Samuels
6) Brendan Nash
7) Carlton Baugh/Denesh Ramdin
8) Andre Russell/Darren Sammy
9) Suleimann Benn/Dev Bishoo
10) Kemar Roach
11) Fidel Edwards

Dwayne Bravo is injured, and unlikely to be picked if he was fit any way. Darren Ganga's too old for a recall, and his Test record is rubbish anyway. Brathwaite had a few good scores, but not enough to force himself into the side yet. He needs to play for the West Indies A team, and get some more experience there first....

I would prefer to see Russell play, but I'm sure the selectors are going to force Darren sammy on us instead....
:?
Nelon Pascal and Shannon Gabriel as reserves, and Jerome Taylor too, when he recovers from injury. Somehow, I don't think he'll be back for the Pakistan series, though.

We've had our debates about Shiv a million times already Mike, it's tedious now and we just don't agree on it, you look at his performance against SA last year when he only made one good knock on a flat track whilst Sars, Barath, Darren and Samuels wasn't playing which is why he was probably the top scorer for us in that series while i'd rather look at his form over the past year especially IN HIS LAST TEST SERIES where he completely flopped in SL, since then he's been dropped from the WI team twice due to poor form (once in the SL odi series and then in the world cup) , with Gibbo lashing out on the "senior batsmen" it would be foolhardy to suggest Shiv's place is certain in this team imo.

Furthermore according to the Trini press Dwayne is back in training now so he is likely to be fit for the Pakistan Test series at least, i'm not surprised you're downplaying his potential to play though seeing as you were questioning his place the other day!! , also Mike how can you defend Shiv's stats on the evidence of the SA series but then turn around and cast doubt on Darren Bravo's place after what he done in the Tests in SL? that's a complete and utter contradiction IMO!! .

Dream on, Afro - there's no way Gibson is going to drop Shiv from the test side!
He will probably omit him, and maybe even Gayle and Sarwan, from the meaningless ODIs, and he wouldn't get any serious arguments from me. But when it comes to Tests, Shiv is a must to play. Only injury can keep him out....

Care to bet money on that?
8-)
The Windies only played six Tests last year, and the series in SL was ravaged by rain, so that's why the test series against the Saffers has to come into consideration. It would take a very foolish man to pick a Test team solely on SL tour results, or lack thereof....

I would pick Lil Bravo over Marlon Samuels personally, but we don't know what's going to happen in this match going on now, and what will happen in the ODIs leading up to the Tests. There's one thing you need to remember - Shiv already has pedigree at the Test level. In contrast, Lil Bravo hasn't hit a Test century yet, has he?

Yeah you said he wouldn't get dropped at the world cup too didn't you? also he had enough chances in SL to PROVE he was in good nick, but time after time he looked lost at the crease, you can continue to live in the clouds if you like Mike but GIBBO ALREADY SAID SENIORS WILL BE DROPPED!!..and who do you think that will be? Gayle after his 300 in SL? nope, Nash who's been doing well since he came in the side? nope, Sars? maybe, THE ONLY OTHER ONE THAT'S LEFT IS A 36 YEAR OLD OUT OF FORM CHANDERS!!..i know it's hard for you to accept but that's just life i'm afraid  ,

In closing i'd say only a biased fool would pick a player who's been out of form FOR A YEAR, hopefully Gibbo won't have as much blind faith as you and actually looks at the batsmen WHO DESERVE to be in the team, hoping and praying Shiv can somehow rediscover his form of the past while he throws his wicket away over and over again is just pure foolishness imo.

Afro, Are you serious about dropping Shiv? Shiv is the only man pon the team should guarantee a test spot ahead of even specialist Sammy. Shiv name should be first on the list on the Test squad!
