C576&ssl=1" />By Akeem Greene [url=mailto:akeem@newsroom.gy]akeem@newsroom.gy[/url] With 100 days to go before the start of the International Cricket Council (ICC) Men’s World T20 in the West Indies and the United States of America, a series of activation events were conducted by host countries on Thursday. From a Guyana perspective, it was an opportunity to re-emphasise the many intangibles hosting the mega event would bring to the country. Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport Charles Ramson Jr. said once again hosting an ICC event intricately allows Guyana to be showcased on a global stage. “When we get an opportunity in this part of the world to show our country on the world stage, cricket gives us a perfect opportunity,” the Minister expressed during a festive ceremony at MovieTowne Mall. He added, “We are not just showing cricket, we are showing the world who we are…it is using the story of cricket to tell the world who we are, it is a story we must sell to the world.” 
Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, Charles Ramson Jr. addressing the event (PHOTO: News Room/Shaconeil Burnette/February 22, 2024) The ICC has themed the event ‘Out of this World,’ and according to co-chair of the Local Organising Committee and Cricket West Indies Director, Bissoondyal Singh, West Indies stands in a unique position to be the first team to win the title on three occasions and also the first team to win it at home since the event started in 2007. Singh, also the President of the Guyana Cricket Board, affirmed the event would be a success in Guyana and encouraged persons worldwide to visit for the matches. Guyana will host group matches from June 2 – 8 and semi-final one on June 26 at the National Stadium, Providence. Built for the Men’s 50-Over World Cup in 2007, the National Stadium has positioned Guyana as the lone territory in the Caribbean to host all of the International Cricket Council events held in the region. The others are the Men’s World T20 (2010), Women’s World T20 (2018) and Under-19 World Cup (2022). This year’s World T20 runs from June 1-29 and will also see matches contested in New York, Dallas, Lauderhill, Antigua & Barbuda, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago and Barbados.

During the ballot period, over three million ticket applications from over 161 countries were received for the pinnacle global event for T20 cricket. Ticket allocations are currently unavailable to nine T20 World Cup matches scheduled in the USA, with the India v Pakistan fixture on 9 June in New York oversubscribed more than 200 times. Both semi-finals in Trinidad and Tobago and Guyana, along with the final in Barbados, were oversubscribed in the ballot, as were two Super Eight matches in Barbados and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. Tickets to all other fixtures in the West Indies are available, with fans encouraged to purchase their tickets now to be a part of the biggest T20 World Cup ever.
