The Asians are due to stage a pre-tournament camp in Barbados from May 14-24 ahead of the start of the global event, which will be hosted in the Caribbean and USA from June 1-29. While in Barbados they will have training sessions as well as three T20 matches- two against a Barbados Select XI and one match against University of the West Indies. The matches against Barbados are slated for May 20 and 22 and the game against UWI on May 23. The camp is being organised by Roland Butcher, the former England batsman and West Indies Senior Men’s Selector. Butcher said: “It is great that the Oman team will be coming out to Barbados early for their pre-tournament camp. They will use the period to get acclimatised to the conditions, as quick as possible. We are delighted to have them in Barbados- this country is the ideal place to start their preparations. We believe the time spent here will be hugely beneficial towards them putting on a good showing in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024.” Duleep Mendis, the former Sri Lanka captain is the Oman’s Head Coach and Chief Development Officer. He said, “We are happy to be heading to the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup early and we are looking forward to our camp in Barbados. It is one of the cricket locations which we all dream of visiting and we want to make the most of our time as we prepare. We have high ambitions in this tournament and we want to focus on our plans from the moment we touch down in a country which is known for its cricket culture and heroes.” Oman named their World Cup squad on Wednesday. Batting all-rounder Aqib Ilyas has been named as Oman’s captain for the upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, beginning on June 1. Ilyas was unveiled as skipper in the team’s squad announcement, with former captain Zeeshan Maqsood keeping his spot in the group. The 2024 edition of the ICC T20 World Cup will be the third appearance for Oman in the last four editions of the marquee event marking its success and consistency to perform at the global level. Oman had an exuberating 2023, championing the Gulf Cricket Cup 2023 followed by an unbeaten run in the ICC T20 World Cup Asia Finals in Nepal to qualify for the ICC T20 World Cup 2024. Oman also emerged runners-up in the ACC Premier Cup 2024 showing glimpses of what it beholds in the near future. Oman are positioned in Group B of the T20 World Cup alongside Australia, England, Namibia and Scotland. Oman begin their T20 World Cup campaign on June 2 against the Eagles in Barbados.
