Clarke is just playing public relations....
He didn't want to pass the revered Don Bradman's record, so like Mark Taylor before him, he declared before reaching that score, claiming he was putting the team first, again like Taylor before him.
He had enough time in the match to go for Lara's 400, and also try to bowl India out. But he was worried that if he did that, the Aussie media would claim he was being selfish and going for personal glory.
I mean, after all, there's two whole days still left in the match....
