In defence of CCC
By Hilary Beckles Director of the CLR James Centre for Cricket Research at Cave Hill Campus

I have been resisting the growing conclusion that Tony Cozier's written cricket commentaries for some time have fallen short of what West Indies cricket now needs, that is, analytical clarity, attention to detail, and perceptive judgment. As cricket performances continue to fall so too, it seems, has the quality of his cricket writing. Happily a younger cadre of promising writers is emerging across the region and the articles by Vaneisa Baksh constitute the new standard.
His problems have many sources but none is surprising. He must be resisted because negativity sucks energy from the eager.

The students are eager. Cozier is negative.

'Windies cricket doesn't need Barbados second team'
By Tony Cozier
SIR Hilary Beckles asserts, in yesterday's Express, that the concept of his Combined Campuses and Colleges (CCC) had "its beginnings in what Sir Frank Worrell had envisioned decades ago".

Surely Sir Frank's vision—and that of the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) in embracing it—was of a team of valid student cricketers truly representative of all the campuses and colleges in the region, not one so utterly and consistently dominated by players from one island, Barbados, and one campus, Cave Hill, of which Sir Hilary is Principal, which also hosts all CCC's "home" matches to the exclusion of other available venues.

Sir Frank's proposal can, indeed, have a positive impact on West Indies cricket but not in the way it has been transformed in his name.

I dont see why there is a fight over this. beckles is doing a job no matter how lopsided the CCC team has been.

the focus ought to be achieving a balanced selection were it possible...or as balanced a selection as possible!

I dont see why Cozier could no commuicate this in a less combative manner that he has. Beckles has explained the siutation very well indeed:

Barbados has twice the amount of young men attending to higher education that the rest of the region.

they are trying to balance this by scholarships to the regions

not always have bajans been in overwhelming numbers on the CC side but they always eem to have had at least 5 players on that side.

but if it is CCC's intent to have balance then it is to work with them to achieve such balance.

and we must remember that even if all things become even in the region there would still be no gurantee of a balanced selection. next year or 3 things could change where there are more than 9 Guyanese or TT's or yardies who deserve to be selected ahead of everyone else...in a situation where full and equal representation of all the region has been achieved.

if regardless there is a great mnanority fro one island nation that overwhelms the selection justifialbly then what...they must be selected that all.

what else could be done but select those who justifiably must be selected on ability alone?

dat is a tempest in ah westindian elite teapot.

if cozy the pozy and beckles want to fight I will provide all thats necessary fuh the battle including tv and cameras.

it seems to me the facts on the ground explains everything. it could have 10 diffrerent bajan 11s' none of dem any good.

beckles seems to be doing some kind lf a job in there. the pozy doh like it, have he axes to grine with beckles and attack where he though he saw a weak point

eff them both in the end...even if beckles derseves some kind of credit for good work ove the years. maybe even cozy too but I wold have to look to find it

bwy! the way things go in the westindies I am happy dat Beckles get something going and going well. we now have 7 teams in the regionals and dats fine, better.

with the exception of Barbados westindian nations doh care about their people...especially those run by the blac elite. I understand the bajans have made education in their country free for their citizens, from primary right up and through university level

if only Barbados send their people in droves to university and colleges it follows that mostly Bajans will get pick fuh the school team.

and dat is what Beckles said...and deh are trying to improve the balance by organising scholarships all over the region.

it seems to me dat Beckles actually doing something.... while Cozy the pozy has attacked an established concrete project on the ground while he has done little or nothing himself.

in compensation Cozy should be attacked, cornered and made to pay a fine.....a fine of 1 or 2 scholarships out of his own pockets...which should be heavy pockets given who he is.... and a mandate to use his great regional and international prestige to organise 15 to 20 more in quick time :D :D :D

hold on! hold on! where should the money be spent instead? whose money is it and wasnt this some kind of idea long in the pipeline? isnt the money being spend=t here long destined for this particular development?

and this kind of project will take soem time to realise comensurate results, the problem may be that it has been born in a time of westindian decline which affects all teams, is regional and will affect the quality of the colleges and university team as well
