I actually ran into him about 23 years ago in Trinidad... as I heard of a book on cricket he edited called 'AN AREA OF CONQUEST"
he had hitched himself onto westindies cricket triumph to exploit it for himself..as he has hitched himself unto westindies failure also to exploit.
yet the book is a nice read - a compilation of essays on westindies cricket by other westindian notables... a sweet read. i bought a copy at the Express bookstore in POS at the time. i have been reading it since.
but since then I have come to know the test called professor sir hillary beckles. a smart man..far more practical than intellectual. he is concerned only about professor sir hillary and his career. he has therefore placed himself at the service of the status quo. indeed by now he is the status quo
intellectual honesty is not beckles forte'. he is not concerned about that! material success is. he is primarily and totally focused on that

I know Beckles, because he taught me history when I went to University of the West Indies (UWI) back in the 1980s....
He wasn't a particularly good lecturer...there were others better than him.
More on the demise of the COTR....Surrey have dropped Chris Jordan from their XI for this weekend's county match.

I am not sooprised! as I said Beckles is not very intellectual. he is smart but not in that way.He wasn't a particularly good lecturer...there were others better than him
beckles is smart enuff to get by academically well enough....but he in addition he placed himself at the service of the status quo, became their running dog in his area, and he has been fulsomely rewarded for that

I am not concerned about the COTR. afro knows his cricket well enuff to know that players like powell, chesney hughes etc., are hit and miss. he is HOPING they hit.
afro on the COTR has always been a political thing...support for a wicb program against real westindies cricket and the players union.
afro is involved for his own material interest and/or that of his connections to the issue on the side of the status quo...the wicb and its operatives.
direct or indirectly afro is one of those wicb operatives. whether he has been sent to do so , or took it up on his own, he functions in defense and furtherance of the cricket status quo nonsense.
