linkKICKING a soccer ball on the dust-swept streets of Guyana during his childhood, Carl Hooper had no inkling he would one day become a professional cricketer.
Opportunities were scarce during his formative years, meaning he wasn’t introduced to the sport which would make him a household name, until the age of 14.
“As kids in the Caribbean we played everything a lot of soccer and a little cricket but I wasn’t really involved (with cricket) until I was 13 or 14,” Hooper told the aifWeekly Times Messenger aif last week.
“The games master (at school) Mr Campbell was the one who gave me the opportunity and the encouragement.”
“I joined the Georgetown Cricket Club at 16 or 17 and it went from there.”
He returns to cricket this season as Woodville District Cricket Club coach after completing an SA Cricket Association advanced coaching course.
“I thought it was a good time to get back involved,” he says.
Good to see ex-cricketers getting involved with the kids.
