Tyson Gay of the US once again showed that he's going to be major competition for Jamaican Usain Bolt at the World Champs in August, when he won the men's 100m in an impressive 9.79 at the Lausanne DL meet yesterday.

Granted, the time was only just legal, with a +2.0 wind, but it is still one of the best times of the season so far. Bolt's compatriot, Asafa Powell, pushed his case for inclusion in the relay team for Moscow by coming second in 9.88, while American Mike Rodgers was third in 9.96, and 37-year old veteran Kim Collins of St Kitts-Nevis clocked a PB of 9.97 for fourth.

Jamaicans Nickel Ashmeade and Kemar Bailey-Cole finished fifth and sixth, both in 10.05, way behind Powell, while at the Jamaica Trials this duo had ended up second and third, and Powell was seventh. This reversal of positions should strengthen the argument for Powell to be included in the relay team.

The women's 400m was won by American Francena McCrorory in 50.36, just ahead of Botswana's Amantle Montsho (50.37), while Novlene Williams-Mills of Jamaica continued her amazing run after her battles with cancer to come in third with 50.87.

Shara Proctor of Anguilla, jumping for Britain, came third in the women's long jump with a leap of 6.92, behind winner Blessing Okagbare of Nigeria (6.98) and Brittney Reese of the US (6.96).

The men's 200m was won by Curacao's Churandy Martina, running for the Netherlands, in 20.01, ahead of Jamaica's Jason Young, who came in second with 20.20. Jamaican Patricia Hall came fourth in the women's equivalent in 22.77.
