Michael Holding, a proud West Indian whose graciousness and gentility always belies his reputation as one of the most lethal if beautiful of all fast bowlers, smiles when asked for his Jamaican take on an Ashes contest.

"The level of emotion is rising," he chortles with characteristic economy. Holding, a serene 56, has brought the character, courage and conviction he revealed as a princely paceman in 60 Test matches to the Sky commentary position he shares with erstwhile England skippers Ian Botham, David Gower, Michael Atherton and Nasser Hussain.

Nearby at Channel Nine, yesterday's Australia captains Richie Benaud, Bill Lawry, Ian Chappell and Mark Taylor spar with Tony Greig who once led England but has been known to attach his colours to many a mast. On the evidence presented in Brisbane, he's again rooting for the Old Dart. No news story there.

Holding cares deeply about the game which continues to accord him a powerful identity and appreciates that however well intentioned they may be, those with a vested interest are hard pressed to make objective judgments.

"Ashes means so much to Australians and to the English. They can try to be objective, but at the same time it is so emotional they tend to lean to one side or the other. I've got no emotional tie so it is easier for me and I can be a lot more objective in giving my opinion," he said.
