joey gorne! oh my! still too early fuh those like him!
one of my favourite players ever! Carew wasnt great but he was tough and great to be around. and he was a smart crcketer, excellent captain, one of the best the westindies ever produced.
the man loved a rum, a lime, jokes. played the cuatro and kept every place he passed in good tempo.
a fine Titty and westindian. if all westindian white people were likeJoey things wud be better!

Here it is...By Cozier...compliments of Googley.
One of 11 children from the village of Santa Cruz, his potential was recognised by his elder sister, Agnes, who took him every Sunday from the age of eight to coaching clinics at Harvard Club. At Fatima, the former West Indies opening batsman and selector Joey Carew, a former pupil, spotted the same exceptional ability. He became Lara's mentor, bringing him to his club, the famous Queen's Park, and into his home where Lara lived for some time as a member of the family.

Carew is a good example how stats alone do not make the cricketer.
Carew was a truly valuable personality in and around the game of cricket in the westindies. and the man was so affable, shrewed and yet fun-loving that his company was sought by all.
carew who happned to be white was loved and welcomed by all communites and groups and individuals in Titty...a national favourite.
I remember when grwoing up and people like Ali and the great blac personalites dominated our mental space Carew was a part of our pantheon for we saw the great captain in him, the great and regular personality.
carews skin colour was never even a hint of a question, as it could have been with others, like Wilie Rodriguez for instance. Carew just belonged thats all...without question!
