there is one final point I wish to make about Alexander...
with weekes and walcott still playing in 1958 when Pakistan arrived in the westindies...Worrell was off at university completing his degreee and so refused the captaincy...either one should have been made westindies captain and not Alexander.
what that meant is that Worrell prolly would not have been made captain in 1961 and a wonderful chapter of cricket histroy would not have been written. both Weekes and Walcott were esxcellent leaders and so would have still been captain..and to Oz in 1961.
the 3 Ws would still have been playing and that would probably have been their last tour. Weekes and Walcott quit when they were just 32 years old at the end of 1958 and so would have 34-35 by 1961.
relieved of the captaincy in Australia Alexander blossomed into a player of immense allround class..a super batsman, with an attitude that eschwed mistakes. to get Alexanders wicket yu had to take it..he never gave it away. and the Oz could not take his wicket cheaply.
if Alexander was not made westindies captain in 1958 he would also have played longer, past 1961 for he would not have had the Worrell thing to deal wit.
and had he not have the captaincy to deal with so early in his careerr..after just 2 test matches...Alexander would prolly have turned out to be the greatest wiketkeeper batsman cricket ever produced. the Oz Gilchrist would have a ways to go yet to catch up. Dujon too!
