It is good to see that there are not as many double-figure team scores as there were last season. It is also good to see more centuries being hit this season, and it is good to see that spinners are no longer dominating the stats. Every mediocre spinner was taking bags of wickets last season, and the season before, and the season before that.

But I would not use this change to claim that "something special is happening in our cricket." I would sound a word of caution. Our batsmen are only batting against our bowlers. The true test will be when our batsmen and bowlers go up against the opposition in both the A team, and the Test team.

What we are doing right now is finding our way back to where we used to be before Otis Gibson came in and screwed up all our pitches. In the not-too-distant past, we had a mix of pitches. We had some that took pace, some that took spin, and some that were good for batting. Then, Gibson came along and insisted that any pitches that were not doctored to favour pace would not get any WI matches in the future. As Keith will remember, the curator at Warner Park in St Kitts, where the pitch was a road, was under pressure to make the pitch less favourable for batting after Gibson's directive.

However, the problem with our groundsmen is that they don't know how to prepare pitches for pacers, and not for spinners, so we ended up with a string of pitches that were a spinner's paradise. It seems that the damage done by Gibson is finally being undone, and we now have a variety of pitches for a change. For example, I'm watching a Sabina Park pitch that is better for batting than it's been for years....

That can only be good, but baby steps please, Afro....
