.50pm Play has been abandoned for the day. This is the first time since 1964 that the first two days of an England home Test have been washed out. These days we can make up time when play does start, but although the forecast is better for tomorrow later in the weekend is dodgy again. On that note I'll sign off for the day. We'll be back tomorrow to try again. Fingers crossed everyone. Bye.

Yep as predicted no play for Day 2 as well. I think they should call off this test match.

Powell is a berk...a foolish batsman. he gets out the same way all the time.

his back foot is planted as he stretches forward guranteeing that if there is any away movement at all he will not meet the ball with the centre of the bat..that it will get the edge of the bat and he will be caught at slip.

he has to try to compemsate for likely away movement..which is what he is being tested with all the time. he has to move across his wicket as well to get the middle as the ball moves away.

Powells rooted back foot is the problem to my mind. he has to be free on both feet, balance to move into position

WICKET! #EngvWi WI 49/1. 17.3 Ov. Powell c Swann b Bresnan 24. Bresnan comes back into the attack and gets the edge of Powell.

No surprises there, then....

and Bumble and Holding...talking about experience essential for the team. all of that is right and well and good. but in the interim we have a batting coach and he apparently is having no postive effect. certainly none on Powell who keeps making the same mistakes
