Skipper earned captaincy on merit, says Hilaire

West Indies Cricket Board chief executive Ernest Hilaire has dispelled any notion of a St Lucian nationalist agenda with the choice of Darren Sammy for West Indies captain. Hilaire’s remarks came following the appointment of the 26-year-old Sammy to the helm of the regional team until the end of the 2011 Digicel Home Series. He stressed that Sammy, the first Test cricketer to emerge from St Lucia, was not chosen on any other criteria other than his performance and leadership qualities.

“For me it is not about St Lucia or any small country. It’s about the man who is best suited for the job,” Hilaire contended. “I think throughout our operations we want to build a meritocracy that people get promoted, they get advancement [and] they are offered retainer contracts based on their performance. “I think we released recently our selection criteria. There is a very clear performance standards document that has been prepared for all players and no matter which country you are from, if you perform, if you meet the standards you will advance in West Indies cricket.”

What merit Hilaire talking about? Sammy couldn't make the team :)

These people are so facking shameless it's downright disgusting.

I've yet to hear one of these fackers (Hunte, Hilaire, Butts etc) explain with some clarity the basis for Sammy selection in the Test squad as a player (nevermind the captaincy). It can't be his numbers - they are mediocre - it can't be this President's Cup performance since they selected and announced the team before and during this tournament.

Sammy has been in this West Indies team since 2004 and from then to now has played a grand total of 8 Test matches. 3 of these were as a scab against Bangladesh - so in reality he would only have been picked on merit for 5 Test between 2004 and 2010!! This is clearly someone who can barely merit selection in Test cricket.

It's clear as daylight that this a politically influenced decision to make Sammy captain.

Sammy is just a puppet cappo so Hunte and Hilaire can pull the strings.. We are in a new era of WI leadership...remote control..

Hiliare know why he seh merit...cause he probably the one that selected the Cappo  Notice how you can't hear a word from the selectors? watching the dog an pony show by Imran yesterday looks like Gibson select the team. This is a hand picked team...it has nothing to do with merit...

but why all the noise. it was clear to me all along that sammy wud be given the job! I said so did I not! and why it wold be so!

Sammy is a scab like Reifer. if Reifer was 30 years old not 37 he wold be captain long time. Dowlin is also was a scab and look how far he got, until they just could take him any further for lack of ability.

the double skunts cyan live with reifer even if he is bajan. but they love Sammy and made the decison to make Sammy skipper at least a year ago or more.

from the day they started making Sammy cappo of this and that team, you knew a sammy captaincy was in the pielines.

allyuh jess wasnt watching. alyuh bline yuh see!

So never mind ability and merit - those are now just antiquated terms not applicable to Scammy and his Dottie brothers.

The Selection Committee, the Head Coach Otis Gibson, the CEO Dr. Ernest Hilaire and the Director of Cricket Tony Howard discussed the leadership of the West Indies senior cricket team with a number of candidates who had been shortlisted for the position of captaincy and following the discussions the Selection Committee recommended Sammy as captain to the Board of Directors. The recommendations of the Selection Committee were approved by the Board.
Told allyuh that Hilaire had his hand in selecting Sammy a specialist cappo with no leadership record and can't make the team on merit
