President of the T&T Cricket Board (TTCB), Azim Bassarath says that this coming season will be much better for T&T, as the board is putting measures in place to ensure success. Bassarath made this comment at the TTCB’s Christmas media luncheon at the National Cricket Centre (NCC) in Balmain, Couva yesterday. “We know that the national senior team is the flagship of the board and we are putting measures in place to ensure that the team return to the top in regional cricket. Our national team’s preparation committee have been coming up with strategies for the next season and we are hoping to have a successful 2010.” During the last season the national team finished fourth in the regional First Class season, third in the regional T20 and made a first round exit in the regional 50 overs tournament. Bassarath however boasted of the success of the youth teams and said the board’s development plan is working well. “We finished second in the under-19 league and won the limited overs version. In under-15 cricket we won the regional title after quite a while. “At the under-13 level, our national team won the Malcolm Marshall Cup against Barbados.”

Bassarath said women’s cricket brought the most joy to T&T over the past year, winning the regional championship and providing the West Indies cricket team with four players.” Over the past year the board undertook an aggressive approach to development and Bassarath said they will continue with this in 2011. “We have brought on stream a number of initiatives in terms of youth development and we will continue in this way. Over the past year we had a fast bowling clinic, continued with the Academy held outreach programmes, hosted club development seminars in every zone and brought on coaching in 114 clubs.” Bassarath added that one problem the board has encountered in one of finance because there is no clear financial policy put in place by the ministry of sport. “We have been hindered in our development process because of the lack of a clear financial policy by the ministry of Sport. We are hoping that this changes so we can budget for certain development programmes in the new year.”

Since Bassarath and his gang took over, T&T Cricket has slid downhill after years of progress and all he can do is look to place blame elsewhere!
