Shivnarine Chanderpaul yesterday made it clear that he available, fit, and ready to play for the West Indies Cricket Team as he responded to a Kaieteur News story which suggested that he declined to play the 5th ODI at Providence.

Chanderpaul’s Statement read:
“As I read yet another slick hatchet job on my reputation by Sean Devers, where in yesterday’s Kaieteur News he stated that he, “… understood that Shivnarine Chanderpaul has declined the offer to play his ‘farewell ODI match’ on Thursday after being overlooked for the first four matches,” I was not surprised, just disappointed!
Let me be clear, so that there can be no misunderstanding. I am available, fit, and ready to play for the WI Cricket Team!
Additionally, I have NOT been contacted by any selector, with any offer to play in any match, since I was asked to retire and when I refused to do so, got dropped from the team following the conclusion of the 2011 World Cup.
Despite having scored 8,778 runs in ODI cricket for the WI at an average of 41.60, I was unceremoniously excluded from the current team, mainly due to my supposed “poor performance” in the 2011 World Cup.
Yet the facts tell a different story, as my average in that World Cup was 38.00, and I was the third best batsman on the WI team of those with at least two innings, plus as is evident, it is almost identical to my lifetime ODI average.
Also, not that anyone should need to be reminded, but it seems like the selectors have short memories, so I’d like to remind them of my record of high accomplishment as a servant of WI cricket for the past 17 years, as can be seen below.
Despite this, the silliness from the WICB continues, both from its surrogates and from indirect messages that have been relayed to me as coming from some of the selectors that, “Chanderpaul can mek as much noise as he wants, but we not going to play him!”Well I’m not going to shut-up and quietly go away! I want to represent my team and play cricket for the WI, especially since my recent record amply demonstrates that I continue to be an accomplished international cricketer.
So next time you “get” a story, Sean, take the time like a good journalist ought to, and check the facts of the story, because, as in this case, you will either be misinformed, or lied to, or both. I hope you have the decency to correct the falsehood that you wrote about me yesterday, now that you have all the facts.
Also, when you do, make sure to let all know that I am available, fit, and ready to play for the WI Cricket Team!”
Shivnarine Chanderpaul

Editor’s note: Mr Devers maintains that a WICB Director informed that Chanderpaul had declined the offer to play a farewell ODI match at Providence. As Chanderpaul mentioned, Devers aggress that he might have been lied to by his source and wishes to let Chanderpaul know that no ‘slick hatchet job’ on his reputation was intended since he also shares the view that Chanderpaul should have been opening the batting in the last ODI series, a view he expressed on radio and in this newspaper.
