Regal Legends, hunting a maiden title at this tournament’s Over-50 category, suffered a final-over defeat to Orlando Softball Cricket League Legends at Pinehill Park in their first match, but convincingly won their second New York Softball League Legends. Despite posting an insufficient 142 all out from their allotted 20 overs on the small ground, miserly bowling brought them back to the brink of snatching victory from the jaws of defeat. Breezing at 121-2, Orlando lost wickets at 121, 124, 124, and 137 to swing the momentum back in Regal’s favour. However, the Guyanese unit missed opportunities in the field to mount the pressure. Lionel Fagu made 40 (4x4s) before he retired hurt, Sham Veerisammy made 32 (3x4s; 2x6s) and John Sakicand a patient 12 not out. Eric Thomas took 2-27 from his four overs, while Jones (1-15), Ramraj Sumair (1-15) and Parsram Persaud (1-20) supported him with economical spells. Mohendra Arjune with three fours and two sixes led the charge for Regal with 32, while Surujdeo Ramdeen (23) and Jones (21) chipped in. New York was bundled for 113 in 19.2 overs as Sumair bagged 3-17 from four overs, backed by Persaud (2-9) and David Harper (2-24). Toney Fernandes (30) top-scored, Lloyd Ruplall made 14 and Jagdesh Persaud 11. Regal romped to victory in 12.2 overs, led by Ramesh Deonarine who hammered four sixes and three fours in his 43, while Arjune continued his form with 34 and Thomas made quick-fire 18 not out. On Saturday at Barnett Park, Regal will face South Florida Cricket League Legends in a must-win match to secure a spot in the semi-finals. The Orlando Cup runs from March 17-19, featuring 24 teams across four categories, namely Open (no bowling restriction), Open (round-arm bowling), Over-40 (Masters), and Over-50 (Legends). Numerous Guyanese players are set to be on show for lucrative prizes.
