TRINIDAD AND Tobago Under-15 cricketers have claimed victory in the 2023 CWI Rising Stars tournament being played in Antigua with a match to spare.
The T&T lads, led by allrounder Brendan Boodoo go into the fifth and final round fixture on Wednesday (April 12) with an unbeaten record, and even an unlikely loss to the Leeward Islands will not prevent them from being crowned champions.
In the tournament which started on April 14, T&T has been unstoppable rolling over Guyana, the Windward Islands, Barbados and Jamaica in emphatic style to snatch the first regional championship at stake for this year.
On Tuesday T&T Cricket Board president Azim Bassarath, the newly elected vice-president of Cricket West Indies, the regional governing body extended congratulations to the new champions.
“The Under-15 team deserves the highest commendations for consistently playing a high standard of cricket with captain Brendan Boodoo, and off spinner Yasir Deen emerging the main architects of the success,” said Bassarath.
He also pointed to the role played by the team’s manager Kelvin Mohammed and coach Brian Brown along with the zonal councils, the Tobago Cricket Association and the national selectors.
“The support of all the stakeholders was crucial in the preparation of the team for this momentous accomplishment coming just a year after the Covid-19 restrictions on team sports were lifted,” said Bassarath.
The local cricket boss was high in praise and appreciation of the Sport Company of Trinidad and Tobago, a government agency, and Scotiabank who are both instrumental in providing assistance for the TTCB’s youth development programmes.
“Without SporTT and Scotiabank, the Under-15s couldn’t have risen to the level they did to establish T&T as the undisputed CWI Rising Stars winners. They were given the best possible opportunity and the youngsters grasped it tightly with both hands,” said Bassarath.
The TTCB and CWI administrator said the other age groups comprising the Under-19s, and Under-17s will be looking to emulate the Under-15s at regional level, while the Under-13s have a bilateral series to look forward to when a representative Guyana team come for a reciprocal visit.
The recent Inter Zone Tournament for the Under-19s and Under-17s have been sponsored by the Point Lisas Steel Products Limited, and The Price Club Supermarket respectively and are key to the development of the youngsters.
