The acoustics in this stadium are poor....

First, we saw American Kirsti Carstins not running, thinking it was a false start, and Vonnette Dixon failing to finish for the same reason. The problem according to Trell Kimmons is that you can barely hear the gun in lanes seven and eight, and the echo makes you think it's a false start.

Now, there's a high-profile casualty, as favourite Lerone Clarke of Jamaica, running out of lane eight, thought it was false start, turned it on too late, and finished fourth in his heat in the men's 60m in a time of 7.05, and failed to advance.

His compatriot Nesta Carter advanced after taking second in his heat in 6.74, while Trinidad's Marc Burns won his heat in 6.69. Among the others advancing to the semis were Guyana's Jeremy Bascom (6.80) and Brijesh Lawrence of St Kitts (7.0).

Caribbean athletes dominated the men's 400m semi-finals, with Bahamian runners winning the first two semis, Pinder (45.94) taking the first, and Brown (46.37) the second. Henry advanced to the final by coming second in 46.01. Nery Brenes of Costa Rica won the third semi in 46.01, ahead of James (46.04), who will end up with a difficult draw in the final.

The women did not fare as well in their equivalent, with both Pompey and Ponteen failing to finish, while Blake (53.00) and Hall (53.21) both finished third in their respective semis, and failed to advance.

There were few shocks in the heats of the women's 60m, as Jamaicans Veronica Campbell-Brown (7.29) and Aleen Bailey (7.34), Laverne Jones-Ferrette of the USVI (7.21), and Chandra Sturrup of the Bahamas (7.23) all advanced to the semi-finals....

In the men's 60m hurdles, Jamaica's Richard Phillips (7.71) advanced to the next round, but his compatriot Eric Keddo (7.96) and Ronald Forbes of the Caymans (7.95) went out.

Trinidad advanced to the final of the men's mile relay as one of the fastest losers with a time of 3:08.32.

In the women's long jump, Britain's Anguilla-born Shara Proctor (6.86) and Bianca Stuart of the Bahamas (6.70) both advanced to the final.

And VCB won the final in a world-leading time of 7.01, despite another poor start!

Britain won the men's mile relay after the Americans were disqualified, in a time of 3:04.72, while Trinidad took silver in a national record of 3:06.85 with a team of Lalonde Gordon; Renny Quow; Jereem Richards; Jarrin Solomon.
