Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar is scheduled to deliver the feature address at the Seventh Annual First Citizens/Wipa Dinner and Awards Function on Tuesday at the Port of Spain Ballroom, Hyatt Regency Trinidad. President and CEO of the West Indies Players Association (Wipa) Dinanath Ramnarine yesterday expressed that his organisation was pleased by the response saying it sends the right signal for the future of the game and its importance on the national agenda. “Beyond being a unifying force for the region, cricket also contributes to tourism, business development and economic growth,” said Ramnarine.
President George Maxwell Richards, a patron of Wipa, and Dr Jean Ramjohn-Richards are special guests of the annual event. Also present will be the new Minister of Sport and Youth Affairs Anil Roberts and members West Indies teams. West Indies players who have distinguished themselves during the calendar year 2009 in Test, ODI and Regional matches, will be honoured. Selection of the awardees will be made by the current West Indies selectors. In addition, the event will also recognize those individuals, organisations and sponsors who have made significant contribution during the past year to WIPA and its members.
Another distinguishing feature of the function is the presentation of Special Awards to past cricketers who have contributed to the game both on and off the field of play. The function will be broadcast live on television across 23 counties throughout the region.
