Commenting on the men’s 30-player squad, National Selector John Inverarity said:
“The ICC World Twenty20 will be a fiercely contested tournament. A great deal of flamboyant cricketing talent will be on display and some games will be turned on their heads by 10 minutes of brilliance. The squad announced today is full of talent, enterprise and all-round strength.
“Within the 30 players named is depth and cover for all departments within the team.”
Commenting on the squad, WNSP Chair of Selectors Julie Savage said:
"The WNSP has chosen a squad, with a diverse array of talents, to form the basis for the selection of a squad of 14 capable of defending the ICC World Twenty20 in Sri Lanka later this year.
“The AIS-Commonwealth Bank Southern Stars squad will continue their preparation ahead of the tournament with a training camp in Sri Lanka from 2-12 August. Following that camp, the final squad of 14 for the tournament will be announced."
The 2012 ICC World Twenty20 will be held in Sri Lanka, with the Men’s tournament commencing on 18 September and the Women’s matches beginning on 26 September. As with the previous ICC World Twenty20 in 2010, the men’s and women’s semi-finals and finals will be played as a double-header.
The Australian men’s team is in Group B alongside Ireland and West Indies, with Australia’s first pool match against Ireland on Wednesday 19 September before playing West Indies on Saturday 22 September to decide who goes through to the next round.
The Commonwealth Bank Southern Stars are in Group A alongside India, England and Pakistan. The defending Champions kick off their campaign against India on 27 September and will then play Pakistan on Saturday 29 September and England on 1 October.
