Cricket Australia (CA) today announced that Tim Coyle has been appointed the Assistant Coach of the national women’s team, the Commonwealth Bank Southern Stars, as well as National Program Manager/Coordinator – Fielding and Wicket-Keeping.
Coyle, who won multiple Sheffield Shield and one-day domestic titles with Tasmania as Head Coach before stepping down at the end of last season, will join the team for their upcoming Women’s Ashes Series in England in August as they endeavour to retain the trophy won in 2011.
The former coach of Tasmania joins the Commonwealth Bank Southern Stars following a period of great success, with the team having claimed the ICC Women’s World Twenty20 in Sri Lanka last October and the ICC Women’s World Cup in India in February this year. The team is currently ranked number one in the world in all three formats.
In his role as National Program Manager/Coordinator – Fielding and Wicket-Keeping, Coyle will work with the State and Territory Associations to manage and coordinate a national fielding and wicket-keeping program. He will work with players in the national pathway programs, including the yearly intake of AIS scholars.
Cricket Tasmania (CT) also advised today that Coyle has accepted the contract position of Coach Development Manager. The role will see him working with the High Performance, Youth Pathway and Grade Cricket Coaches throughout the State as part of CT’s increased support for the education and development of coaches.
Coyle enjoyed a highly successful eight-year tenure with the state after taking over in 2005. The Tasmanian native led the state to its first Sheffield Shield title in 2006-07 and added further titles in 2010-11 and 2012-13. He also helped the Tigers claim the one-day domestic trophy in 2007-08 and 2009-10.
The decorated coach also played for Tasmania at Under-19 level and played seven Sheffield Shield matches in the 1990-91 season. He spent 10 years coaching in Launceston before being appointed Cricket Tasmania’s Game Development Manager in 2000. From 2002 – 2005 Coyle was the state’s Fielding and Wicket-Keeping Coach and was also in charge of various Tasmanian under-age representative sides before being appointed coach of the men’s state side.
Speaking about the appointment, CA’s Executive General Manager – Team Performance Pat Howard said: “Cricket Australia and Cricket Tasmania are extremely pleased that Tim Coyle will continue to play an integral role within Australian cricket.”
“Tim has had extensive experience and achieved sustained success at the elite level and has a recognised ability to develop players.
“To have the current Bupa Sheffield Shield-winning coach support the Australian cricket program across men’s and women’s games is a fantastic opportunity.
“Fielding and wicket-keeping skills have been highlighted as an area for improvement nationally. Tim’s expertise in this area will aim to lift the standards of these skills across all of Australia cricket.
“The Commonwealth Bank Southern Stars are coming off the back of a very successful period and Tim will work with the group and Head Coach Cathryn Fitzpatrick as they aim to remain number one across all formats of the women’s game.”
Speaking about his new roles, Coyle said: “I’m excited about the next phase of my coaching career and taking on this diverse role that will enable me to work across men’s and women’s programs within Australian cricket.”
“Working with a national program as part of the Commonwealth Bank Southern Stars team is an exciting opportunity for me as a coach. I’m looking forward to working with a world champion team, particularly as we head into back-to-back Women’s Ashes campaigns and work to maintain our status as the number one team in the world.
“Working in the women’s national program will provide a new challenge for me and expose me to a different pathway within Australian cricket.
“I’m very passionate about fielding and wicket-keeping and have spent much of my career focusing on these disciplines. I’m looking forward to working across all State and Territory Associations to ensure that Australia produces the best fielders and wicketkeepers in the world,” Coyle said.
Coyle has been contracted to his CA roles for a period of two years.
