Will Australia Be Whitewashed?

Poor Australian batting might lead to whitewash
It seemed not that long ago that others cowered at Australia's batting might. Batsmen like Matthew Hayden, Ricky Ponting, the Waugh twins, Michael Hussey and Adam Gilchrist often ran up huge scores at frenetic run-rates, leaving adversaries defeated and demoralized. They played with such confidence and verve that even the loss of quick wickets at the top of the order never curbed their aggression nor their resolve to drive opponents into the dust; to overwhelm them so thoroughly that they opt to surrender rather than to stand and fight.

Those days are past. If anything it is the Australians that now have to bow before superior rivals. Earlier this year they were blown away 4-0 on tour of India as they were unable to withstand India's spin attack on turning wickets. Now it is England's turn to inflict humiliation in significantly different conditions. Unless their batting undergo a miraculous improvement in quality then whatever scheme the Australians employ for the rest of the series will inevitably come to naught. Like Shane Watson's pads, a series whitewash will be difficult to avoid.
I think only bad weather can cause the to avoid it I feel. their batting has been atrocious.

An excellent article, as usual, Garfield....

I find it hard to develop any interest in this over-rated Ashes series. Australia are so bad that this is an appalling mis-match.

I'm more interested in watching India-South Africa at the end of the year...now that is a better high-quality match-up.

Oh that is the series I cant wait to see. Should be good to see if the Indians can combat South Africa's pace. Good to see if the likes of Dhawan and Pujara, who have been scoring heavily can continue in the same mode in lively surfaces against such a high class attack.
