Surrey are hoping to lure West Indies batting great Brian Lara out of retirement as a shock signing for this season's Friends Provident T20 Cup.

Lara retired from international cricket in 2007 but he had nets at The Oval on Monday as the first stage to a possible comeback.
Telegraph Sport understands that the 40-year-old left-hander is now in discussions with Surrey officials who have lined up Lara as a possible replacement for leg-spinner Piyush Chawla whose international commitments with India are likely to restrict his availability for county cricket.
"We are talking to Brian about a possible; le future role in the club," said Surrey chief executive Paul Sheldon.
