There is no noise being made, rather recognising a landmark on debut but perhaps Abbott being South African presents some challenges for you. The same recognition was offered to Philander from his debut to that extraordinary run of 5fors , still being lauded for the fine bowler he is.

I am also sure any other similar achievements, in the distant or recent past, were widely reported in the media and appreciated and discussed in forums like this the World over by followers of Cricket.

I think branding Abbott an apartheid specialist is grossly contumelious. Apartheid is over, and has been over for quite some time now, with a peace and reconciliation process. Since then the Country has had a succession of Black Presidents to serve all of its people, and in particular redress some of the balance in favour of the Black majority. I am sure there are many things they, in SA, are yet to get right, as all regions do, but to brand the young man an apartheid specialist is inappropriate.

Upon what do you base this?

It is possible Abbott will fade away and then again he may emulate his countryman, Philander, and have a productive career.

In the meantime it is a very good start so well done to him.

According to my disclaimer, part of my acknowledgement of Abbotts performance, also acknowledges that South Africa are doing something right with the bowlers coming through. In Steyn they have a potent force and the bowlers around him are equally adept. The Saffers have strength in depth in the bowling department, one hit wonder or not.

Now, if Abbott emulates Philander, as Mail deems a possibility, I know who my reserve bowler is in case my Philader instead of Sammy gets injured or needs a rest. Another Saffer! No problem for me!

Saying the wrong thing is recognised Internationally and it is not about PC gone mad.

Bias and prejudice wear the same outfit.

Have to agree with you... and for Mapoui's information I am West Indian. In the context of South Africa's history suggesting a man still ascribes to apartheid, even in jest, could be very touchy. I bet Mapoui wouldn't say that to the man's face... and if you wouldn't, you shouldn't :) my two cents!

And yes, there are one hit wonders, but we enjoy the hit while it lasts and hope that there is follow up. Another player who comes to mind who went on to disappoint is Franklyn Rose. His problem seemed to be more with his head than with his ability...

Saw Rose at Lords in 2000, Reon King was also in that team, and both looked good but I sensed Rose got carried away with the modelling aspect of his public persona.

King is another one who seemed to have had the attributes to be a very good bowler.

We narrowly won that one and the series 3-1. Windies won the opener at Edgbaston.

Good attack Ambrose, Walsh, Rose and King. Nixon McLean who was also on tour was quite handy.
